Turns a PDF into an EPUB, which is the one conversion in this direction with an obvious point: a PDF has fixed pages and an e-reader has a screen of a completely different size. Paragraphs are rejoined so the text reflows, and headings become chapters. Read the first section before relying on it — the reconstruction is a guess, and how good a guess depends entirely on the PDF.

Why this conversion is worth doing at all

A PDF is fixed-layout by design. On a phone or an e-reader that means pinching and panning across a page laid out for A4, which is the single most common complaint about reading PDFs on anything small.

An EPUB has no pages. The text flows to fill whatever screen it is on, at whatever size you set, and the reader paginates it. That is the entire reason to convert — and it is the one thing a PDF genuinely cannot do.

What is actually recoverable

A PDF does not contain paragraphs. It contains instructions to draw glyphs at coordinates, and the paragraph structure has to be inferred from where those marks sit — which lines belonged together, where one paragraph ended.

Reconstructed: the text; paragraphs, rejoined so they reflow; headings, from text noticeably larger than the body — which also become the chapters and the table of contents.

Not reconstructed: images, tables, columns, footnotes, headers and footers. Page numbers printed into the PDF become stray text in the middle of the flow, because the converter has no way to know a "37" sitting alone at the bottom of a page was furniture rather than content.

Every conversion says whether the PDF was tagged — carried a description of its own structure — because that is the best predictor of whether the result will be good.

Which PDFs convert well

Well: a novel, a report, a paper, a manual — anything that is mostly running prose in a single column, exported from a word processor.

Badly: two-column journal articles, magazines, anything designed rather than typed, forms, and books with a lot of tables or figures. The text will all be there; the order will not always be.

Not at all: a scan. There is no text in it, and that is reported as an error rather than as an empty book.

Scanned PDFs and what they really are

There are two entirely different things called a PDF.

A born-digital PDF was made by software — exported from Word, generated by a report tool, printed to PDF. It contains real text with real font information, and it converts cleanly in every direction.

A scanned PDF is a photograph of a piece of paper wrapped in a PDF container. There is no text in it at all — only an image — regardless of how clearly you can read it on screen.

The difference decides what is possible. Rasterising works identically on both. Extracting text works only on the first, and a scan yields nothing at all — which is reported plainly rather than handing back an empty file.

Reading it on a Kindle

Modern Kindles take EPUB directly — email it to your Send-to-Kindle address, or copy it across with the app. Older ones want a different format, and converting further is Amazon's job rather than this page's.

Everything else — Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Calibre, every reading app on a phone — takes EPUB natively.

Questions

Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The rendering happens in this tab using pdf.js — the same engine Firefox uses to display PDFs. Contracts, medical letters, bank statements and legal filings are the documents this conversion is usually for, and none of them leaves your machine.
Will the images come across?
No. This reconstructs the text; pictures in the PDF are not extracted. For a book that is mostly pictures — a comic, an art catalogue — converting to EPUB is the wrong move, and reading the PDF is better.
Why are there page numbers in the middle of my text?
Because they were printed onto the PDF’s pages, and a converter cannot reliably tell a page number from a paragraph that happens to be a number. An EPUB has no pages of its own, so they end up in the flow.
My two-column article came out scrambled.
Expected, unfortunately. Recovering the reading order of a two-column page from coordinates alone is not reliably possible — the text is all there, but the order follows the geometry rather than the argument.
Can I read the result on a Kindle?
Yes on any recent one — they take EPUB directly. Send it to your Send-to-Kindle address or copy it over with the app.
Where does the book title come from?
The largest heading in the document, unless you set one. That is what your reader shows in its library, so it is worth setting if the guess is wrong.
Is my password safe to type here?
It is used to decrypt the file inside this tab and is never sent anywhere. That is precisely the argument for this page: uploading a password-protected document and its password to a third-party server is asking them to hold both halves of the lock. Turn your Wi-Fi off before typing it if you want to be certain.
Can I convert several PDFs at once?
Yes. Drop as many as you like, or a whole folder. Each produces its own set of images, named after the original.
