Order is the whole job

Merging five files is not one decision, it is six: which files, and what order. So nothing happens on drop. Files queue up, you arrange them, and the merge runs when you say so.

Sort by name orders them the way a person reads numbers rather than the way a computer sorts strings — page-2 before page-10, which is the opposite of what plain alphabetical sorting does and the source of a great many wrongly-assembled documents.

The arrows move one file at a time. The cross removes one without clearing the rest.

Nothing is re-encoded

Every page is copied as the object it already was. Text stays as text, images keep their original compression, vector artwork stays vector.

This matters because the obvious way to build these tools — render each page to an image and make a new PDF out of the pictures — is much easier and produces a visibly worse file: fuzzy text, no selection, no search, and often ten times the size. Nothing here does that.

The result is that a page which has been through this tool is byte-for-byte as good as it was in the file you started with.

What travels with a page, and what does not

A PDF page carries its own contents — text, fonts, images, vector drawing. All of that moves intact.

Some things belong to the document rather than to any page. Form fields, the outline (bookmarks) sidebar, document-level JavaScript and attachments live at that level, and rebuilding a document from pages does not bring them along. Where the source has any of them, this is said explicitly in the result rather than discovered later.

Annotations — links, comments, highlights — travel with the page they sit on. A link that pointed at a page you removed will still be there, but it will no longer lead anywhere.

Why the limits elsewhere exist

Every hosted merge tool caps something: two files free, or three a day, or 100 MB. Those caps are not protecting your document — they are protecting a server that has to receive, hold and process it, and a business model that needs a reason for you to pay.

Neither applies here. Your files are opened by this page, in this tab, on your own machine. The only ceiling is your device's memory, and it is a much higher one than any free tier offers.
